Visiting Clinical and Community Psychologist
About Me
Hello, I’m Dr. Asma’u
I’m a clinical and community psychologist, and I'm passionate about broadening our current understandings of mental health, wellbeing, and distress. I believe psychological support should be a creative, collaborative space where individuals and communities especially those often marginalized in mainstream frameworks feel heard and empowered. My approach is deeply grounded in systemic and narrative therapeutic approaches, community psychology, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, including third-wave approaches. I believe the support you receive should not only be effective but also culturally appropriate and rooted in community values.
Some of my areas of expertise include:
Migrant and cross-cultural mental health
Community-based psychological support
Systemic and narrative therapy
Deradicalisation and countering violent extremism
Learning disability support
Youth-focused interventions
I undertook my clinical psychology doctorate at the University of East London, qualifying in 2024. I also hold an MSc in Global Mental Health from King’s College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, a postgraduate qualification in low-intensity CBT interventions, and a BSc in Psychology from University College London. Additionally, I am registered with the HCPC in the UK and licensed by the NACP in Nigeria.
Over the past eight years, I have worked across a variety of diverse clinical settings in the United Kingdom, Canada, Thailand, and Nigeria. My professional journey has taken me through public health, community, and third-sector environments, providing support in inpatient acute psychiatric wards, single mothers’ homes, NGOs, and youth-focused charities.
Whether I am engaging in clinical practice, research, or service development, my goal is always to step outside traditional boundaries to support mental health in ways that truly resonate with people's unique cultural experiences.
